Another January, Another Arena
St. George's & Mattis Point, NL (Map)
Winter 2010.
After a tiring Christmas vacation, it was sort of nice to get back to Newfoundland and relax. I really didn't get up to too much, but Nicole & I did drive down to the St. George's Bay/Stephenville area one Saturday (this area is about an hour south of me). We wanted to go skating in Stephenville, but the public skate wasn't until 8pm. Thankfully I remembered that the Town of St. George had a small arena & that we could see about renting their ice. There was only a 1/2 hour before the St. George open public skate, but the manager let us rent the ice early for $38 (this would allow us to break out the pucks & the twigs). I really enjoyed the intimacy of the arena & the boards were loud with a capital L. I only fired a couple of slap shots as I felt bad at how much the arena echoed as the puck slammed into the boards (you know, because I couldn't hit the net...). We didn't do much else beside drive 2km down a connector road to the bustling metropolis of Mattis Point. Okay. That's January coverage for 2011.
