June Insular Adventure: West Bae

West Bay & Cape St. George, NL (Map)

Spring 2022

Just like back on May 2-4, work was once again interfering with an important long weekend.

We still had to get away for Isy's birthday though, for at least a night or two.

The Port au Port Peninsula is only a little over an hour away and provides good ROI in terms of the gas and time spent to get down there. It's just far enough from the house that I probably only find myself down there a couple of times a year these days, and this lack of spending time down there, means there's a chance of finding some side street or cove I may have left unexplored.

Checking AirBNB, I found a fantastic cabin in West Bay on the northeast side of the Port au Port. This had extra appeal to me as West Bay is one of those villages which has never been featured in an update previously (I've always driven straight from West Bay Centre to Lourdes).

I should have read the cabin instructions better as there was no fridge and we were asked to limit our water consumption. I had bought a whole sheet of three leches cake from the local Mexican restaurant, Tlacuache; which we now had to keep outside at times and also make runs to the store for ice.

Why did I buy a whole sheet of cake for the two of us? Well Isy saw their post about how they'll make a whole sheet of cake for you and said it would be nice for a birthday. Did she mean for a birthday party with more people? Who knows!

Only 40 feet in front of our cabin, the beach stretched for forever to the north and south. It was as good as any place to break in my fresh new shoes.

The beach here in West Bay and up towards Tea Cove is known for its pyrite and Isy wanted to bring all of the pyrite home. I showed some quick thinking here though, saying that she could bring home all the pyrite she was willing to lug back to the cabin.

This area of the province has a lot of small creeks that cross the road as they head from the hills to the ocean. Just like on my bike ride in this area, I liked getting a closer look at them today while not in a car.

What I think is some Chickweed along the way.

Coming to a bigger creek crossing, there was a promising-looking house hidden in the trees, but I slacked off and didn't come back for it.

Pleasant sunset scenes.

The next day called for morning showers leading into afternoon rain before clearing up in the last hour of the day. We were probably in the perfect place for that though, as we could simply relax and read and have Isy lose a game of Scrabble (300 to 192), then eek out a Scrabble win (263 to 260), all while working to convince Kingsley to go out in the rain.

I was also able to make another ice run, where the locals were talking about the weather and one declared, "weathermen are all like liberals, all lies!"

Definitely worse places to wait out some showers.

We went for an evening walk under grey skies before fleeing the blackflies and calling it a night.

The next day we stopped for breakfast at the cafe in Mainland, before getting out for a short hike at Boutte de Cap Park in Cape St. George. It was sunny and hot to the point that we had to consider how long it was going to be before Kingsley had enough of our shenanigans and sat down, haha.

It's here that Isy sized up the seaside cliffs that stretched high above the Atlantic.

I didn't like getting too close to the edge, but man, how nice would it be to have a sea kayak (or charter a boat) to that little secluded beach at the bottom?

Anyway, the only thing of note after this was stopping in Cape St. George to see that their Freshramps skatepark was still dismantled from either Covid or vandalism times. It remains a question mark on my map of Newfoundland skateparks.

And with that, we tackled the two-hour drive back to the house from Cape St. George.
